Review: SUICIDE WATCH by Kelley York

SUICIDE WATCH
by Kelley York
pub date 12/20/2012

product description from goodreads.com

18-year-old Vincent Hazelwood has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades sucked. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. Still, Vince thought when Maggie Atkins took him in, he might’ve finally found a place to get his life—and his issues—in order.

But then Maggie keels over from a heart attack. Vince is homeless, alone, and the inheritance money isn't going to last long. A year ago, Vince watched a girl leap to her death off a bridge, and now he's starting to think she had the right idea.

Vince stumbles across a website forum geared toward people considering suicide. There, he meets others with the same debate regarding the pros and cons of death: Casper, battling cancer, would rather off herself than slowly waste away. And there’s quiet, withdrawn Adam, who suspects if he died, his mom wouldn't even notice.

As they gravitate toward each other, Vince searches for a reason to live while coping without Maggie's guidance, coming to terms with Casper's imminent death, and falling in love with a boy who doesn't plan on sticking around.

My Review:

I honestly don't even know where to begin with this review. I had every intention when I began reading this one to sit down right after and write up a review for it, but by the time I reached the end, that notion was long forgotten, buried beneath the pain and hurt and ultimate happiness York's words left me with. I can honestly say that it's been a while since I've stayed up really late to finish a book, and even longer than that since one grabbed me like this one did. I finished it at about 3am, and was up till well after 4 trying to forget about it enough to go to sleep. It's that powerful.

SUICIDE WATCH tells the story of Vince, a foster kid who, in my opinion, epitomizes a broken soul. Right from the beginning, I felt Vince's pain over being abandoned by his parents, being left to fend for himself. He's painfully shy and introverted, and secretly harbors thoughts of taking his own life. This is what leads him to a suicide-friendly website, and ultimately the two equally-as-broken souls that end up changing him forever.

And those souls are Casper and Adam, two fellow website forum members Vince surprisingly builds online relationships with. Casper, suffering from cervical cancer, is sassy and outspoken, while Adam (screen name Roxwell) merely IMs Beatles lyrics and nothing else. But you can see right away that Vince feels a connection to these two, that they are an unknown lifeline for him. He finds himself looking forward to their chats online, even if the topic at hand is self-inflicted death.

When Casper asks to meet, Vince is naturally reluctant but agrees. The two draw even closer, sharing a bond that most of us would/could never understand. Their second in-person meeting includes Adam, who is even more painfully shy and withdrawn than Vince. But Vince, now comfortable with this new-found social circle, keeps at Adam until he opens up, and instantly Vince is drawn to him (in my opinion, because he sees himself in Adam; but that's just my opinion, lol).

The rest of this heartbreaking tale consists of three teens who are pulled by unspeakable forces into a friendship stronger than the death they each secretly want but don't want, and York unfolds their tale with expert craft and mind-numbing emotion. There is so much I would love to say here, but I can't for fear of ruining the experience of reading it. Just suffice it to say that SUICIDE WATCH will tear your heart into pieces before it gently pulls those pieces back together again.

My Rating

Only because I set my ratings system at 1-5 am I giving SUICIDE WATCH 5 Stars. Believe me when I say it deserves so many more.

And a bit about Chelsea!

I grew up (and still live) in the Phoenix, AZ area where I studied Design at Arizona State University. During college, I also took my first creative writing class, which is how I fell in love with writing. In 2007, I found myself working at a credit union, staring at a computer screen, and bored out of my mind. I promptly opened up Word and began writing a story...to kill time. (I know, I'm a terrible employee.) But eight pages and forty-five minutes later, I realized I was actually having fun. Years later, (after I quit the credit union and became a self-employed artist...because let's face it, I was no good at "being on the clock" what, with all the story-writing during "work" hours) I asked a publishing company to edit a short story of mine and before I knew it I was on the road to publishing my first book, Sophie & Carter. Now I spend most of my days writing, painting, and trying not to burn the house down when I cook.
Other than that, I'm an avid reader, a lover of music, a Battlestar Galactica fan, a coffee addict, a chronic texter, an obsessive teeth-brusher, and a shameless superhero enthusiast. Oh, and I have the best agent in the world, Suzie Townsend of Nancy Coffey Literary!

Cover Reveal--SUICIDE WATCH by Kelley York!

Hi guys! First, my apologies for the sporadic posting here on the 'ol blog. I'm under deadline (and behind--sorry, K!) so I've had to let the blog sit on the back burner as of late. But I'm happy to be back today as part of the cover reveal for a dear friend of mine's latest novel, SUICIDE WATCH!

And since I'm such a nice guy, I won't keep you waiting. Here it is, the cover for SUICIDE WATCH by Kelley York!

Isn't that awesome? I just love the dark feel of it. I've recently begun reading it (thanks so much, Kelley!) and I'm loving it. Kelley's writing immediately draws me in and always leaves me feeling changed afterward, so I know I'm in for a fantastic read with this one!

Here's a bit about the book:

18-year-old Vincent Hazelwood has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades sucked. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. Still, Vince thought when Maggie Atkins took him in, he might’ve finally found a place to get his life—and his issues—in order.

And a bit about Kelley!

Once upon a time, Kelley York was born in central California. And it's there she she still  esides with her lovely wife, step-daughter, and an abundance of cats, while fantasizing  bout moving to England or Ireland. She has a fascination with bells and animals, is a lover of video games, Doctor Who, manga and anime, and likes to pretend she’s a decent photographer. Her life goal is to find a real unicorn. Or at least write about them.

Kelley is a sucker for dark fiction. She loves writing twisted characters, tragic happenings, and bittersweet endings that leave you wondering and crying. Character development takes center stage in her books because the bounds of a person's character and the workings of their mind are limitless.

CHAPTER 1

Scarlet had her memories back, which meant two things.
She knew where the Fountain of Youth was.
And she was mad at Tristan.
Still clutching a bloodstained knife in her hand, she marched through the graveyard and glanced over her shoulder at the green-eyed boy she’d loved for centuries. “By the way, you suck.”
“Wow,” he said.
“I can’t believe you tried to kill yourself.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“Agh. Spare me your sacrificial agenda.” Another memory hit her and she turned to face him, her blood boiling. “And you let me wander around with amnesia for two years before meeting me?”
He opened his mouth, but Scarlet cut him off. “And then you let me date Gabriel? What the hell, Tristan?”
A muscle flexed in his jaw. “First of all, I was supposed to die. So I didn’t think intervening in your love life was any of my business. Gabriel made you feel happy and safe and I wasn’t about to screw that up for you. And second,” he raised his voice over the protest on Scarlet’s lips, “the reason I didn’t ‘meet’ you for two years was because I didn’t think I’d be able to follow through with killing myself if you and I were, you know…pals.” His eyes glinted.
She scowled. “Well that was selfish of you.” Turning, she resumed her walk through the dark cemetery.
“You think I was selfish?” Scarlet could almost hear his jaw drop as he followed behind her. “You’re the one who shut everyone out. You’re the one who kept secrets and stole stuff and ran away—“
“I had to run away,” she snapped.
His voice rumbled in anger. “Did you have to die too?”
Spinning around to face him—again—Scarlet met his hard eyes in the darkness. “I wasn’t trying to die.”
“But you did,” he said coldly.
They stared at each other for a moment, heartbreak colliding in the space between them. Because of her connection to him, Scarlet could feel the hurt and fear pulsing through his veins as his eyes traced over her in the moonlight.
But she could also feel the love heating his core as he took her in. And it was the love—that undying fire that blazed in him and burned through her—that stole her words away as she looked at him.
He was so beautiful. Even standing in a graveyard, covered in dirt and blood, he was striking. His dark hair fell wild around his face and his green eyes shone in the moonlight.
A shiver of desire ran through him--or was it her?--and Scarlet clenched the knife in her hand so she wouldn't do something stupid. Like crush her mouth to his and claw at his clothes until there was nothing between them but heat and skin. But that would, of course, lead to death.
Everything always led to death.
Tristan softened his voice as he scanned her face. “What happened in your last life, Scar? What are you hiding?”
Scarlet's chest tightened at his question.
Millions of Avalon stars winked from above and reminded her of a time when she and Tristan spent their days in the trees and everything was fair; everything was simple.
Nothing was simple anymore.
He tilted his head and repeated,"What are you hiding, Scar?"
She could feel his heartbeat echoing inside her soul; powerful and constant, as his emotions swam into her.
Patience... Love... Worry...
Could she tell him the truth about the fountain? The whole truth?
The truth that would undo any hope they had of a happy ending?
She opened her mouth—
“Holy crap! Did you guys see that?” Nate jogged up to them with a knife in his hand, a grin on his face, and a trickle of blood running down his neck. “I totally kicked Ashman ass over there! I was all like hi-ya and you wanna piece of me? I was a super slayer! Buffy’s got nothing on me.”
Scarlet shut her mouth and shifted away from Tristan’s searching eyes as Nate continued.
“It was life and death out there, guys. Life and death. They just kept coming at me and I just kept putting them down.” Nate took a moment to catch his breath. “I mean, sure, I screamed like a girl a few times and accidently stabbed myself at the beginning, but still. I feel amazing! For the first time in five hundred years I feel alive.”
Moving his gaze away from Scarlet, Tristan eyed Nate's neck. “You’re bleeding.”
Nate touched his wound and drew back bloody fingers. “I’m bleeding. Haha! I have a battle wound. Oh, this is so awesome.” Tucking his knife into his waistband with a smile, he looked around. “Where’s everyone else?”
Scarlet’s stomach churned as reality whooshed in and slapped her in the face. “Raven kidnapped Heather.” Saying it out loud had emotion crawling up her throat.
Nate’s face fell. “What?”
With a deep breath, Scarlet summed up the evening’s events. “Raven is actually Clare—Heather’s boss at the coffee shop—not Laura. Laura was working for Raven, but Raven killed her and dumped her body in a grave—”
Ohmygoodness. Laura was really dead.
Scarlet blinked.
My guardian is dead.
More emotion wiggled up her throat and she quickly swallowed, trying to keep her focus on the things at hand.
Scarlet cleared her throat. “Then Raven had an Ashman kick the crap out of me so she could kidnap Heather and hold her ransom for the map to the fountain. And the lifeforce between Tristan and I shifted. So I can still feel his emotions, but he can’t feel mine anymore.”
Thank God.
If Tristan were still able to sense her, he’d know she was freaking out. Not just about Heather or Laura. But about the fountain and what finding it would mean.
A sick feeling swirled inside her gut.
“And because the lifeforce shifted, Scarlet now has her memories back,” Tristan added, sliding his eyes to her.
Nate blinked. “What? I go slaying for ten minutes and I miss everything—wait.” His eyes shot to Scarlet. “Does that mean you know where the fountain is?”
Scarlet hesitated.
It was decision time.
No truth? The whole truth? A vague truth?
“Yes,” she said, going with vague. It was always safer to start vague. “But we need to rescue Heather before we do anything else.”
Her heart started to hammer at the thought of her happy friend being held hostage by a vengeful witch with a drug problem. So many things could go wrong.
So many things already had.
Nate nodded. “Did you see which direction Raven took her?”
Looking around the cemetery, Scarlet shook her head and let out a groan of frustration as guilt swamped her soul. “This is all my fault. I should have stayed by Heather’s side. I should have protected her.”
Tristan scanned the premises. His coat was sliced open in several places and dark splotches of blood slowly seeped through the shredded fabric of the black T-shirt he wore beneath.
His immortal body wasn’t healing like it should, which meant his wounds had been inflicted with Bluestone weapons.
Not good.
“Dude.” Nate caught sight of Tristan’s injuries. “Are you okay?”
Tristan looked down at his stained clothes and shrugged as if the slashes in his skin were more of a nuisance than anything else. “I’m fine. The cuts are shallow. Where’s Gabriel?”
Scarlet furrowed her brow. “He came with me to the coffee shop, but he was gone when I came out. He wasn’t with you guys?”
They shook their heads and worry crept through Scarlet’s veins.
“I’m sure he’s around here somewhere.” Tristan looked calm as he glanced around, but Scarlet could feel concern coiling inside his chest. “Why don’t you two go look for him at The Millhouse and I’ll search the rest of the graveyard.”
Scarlet nodded.
Good plan.
Split up. Find Gabriel. Rescue Heather.
And stay away from the fountain.
Okay, that last part might be difficult since Amnesia Scarlet spilled the beans about the freaking map, but whatever. She could still throw them off. She could lie.
She’d been lying for years.
As Scarlet and Nate headed out of the cemetery, Tristan walked deeper into its shadowy depths. Distant music from the ongoing Avalon carnival drifted through the night air, making the wind sound eerily happy as it wrapped around headstones and swept through Scarlet’s hair.
Putting her knife away, she rubbed her head where it still throbbed from the blow Raven had dealt her with the business end of a crossbow.
One more reason to hate the crazy witch.
Everything was so screwed up—
A sharp pain darted up Scarlet’s body and twisted around her insides with liquid fire until she doubled over. Sinking to the ground, Scarlet clutched her chest and stomach, afraid her skin might split open and empty her insides all over the grass. She tried to suck in air, but her lungs wouldn’t work.
Nate dropped down beside her with terror in his eyes. “What’s wrong?”
The fire turned to ice and wrapped around her organs and bones, squeezing without mercy. Scarlet couldn’t help but cry out loud.
“Tristan!” Nate called, checking her pulse before pulling at the skin beneath her eyes to check their color.
Usually when Scarlet felt pain of any sort it was because her heart was failing. And when her heart started to fail, her eyes would glow and her nose would bleed. But this didn’t feel like heart failure.
This felt like something else entirely.
She squeezed her eyes shut and grimaced until the agony started to subside. Her muscles loosened, her lungs started to expand, and soon Scarlet wasn’t hurting anymore.
Out of pain, but still very confused, she opened her eyes to find Tristan crouched beside her.
His green eyes were glowing into the night as panic oozed from his pores. “What just happened?” He searched her face.
Good question.
Scarlet rubbed her chest to make sure all her insides were where they were supposed to be. Yep. Still in one piece.
Phew.
“She just collapsed in pain.” Nate turned his eyes from Scarlet to Tristan. “Dude. You need to calm down. Your eyes are super green.”
Tristan rubbed a hand over his mouth, still looking at Scarlet. “It must be the transition. Maybe when the curse shifted we switched places, putting Scarlet in pain without me, just like I used to be in pain when I was without her.”
Well crap.
That would suck.
“I guess that would make sense.” Nate scratched the back of his head. “Especially since her pain went away when you walked back over to us.”
Scarlet stood from the ground and brushed the cemetery grass off her pants as Tristan and Nate rose to stand beside her.
A surge of guilt rolled through Tristan and Scarlet hurried to reassure him. “I’m fine now—”
“You’re not fine,” he snapped. “You fell to the ground in pain when I was only thirty feet away from you.”
Yeah.
That was weird.
Nate pressed a finger to his lips. “If the lifeforce reversed your roles—”
“Oh no.” Scarlet’s eyes widened as the possibility sank in. “If our roles have been reversed, does that mean my touch can make Tristan sick? My touch can kill him?”
She took a step away from Tristan and felt his pounding heartbeat soften. Stepping back up to him, the pounding resumed. “Oh no. No, no—”
“Okay. Don’t freak out.” Nate held a hand up.
Too late.
“His heart responds to my nearness.” Scarlet shook her head as her chest tightened in despair. “No, no, no.”
This couldn’t be happening.
“So it appears the curse has shifted,” Nate said calmly. “We can handle this.” He held up a calm hand to match his calm face and calm eyes as he looked at her. “All we need to do is make sure you two stay within close range of one another so you don’t writhe in pain, but far enough away so Tristan doesn’t, you know, die.” He shrugged. “Easy. We’ll just reenact the ten-foot rule between you guys.”
Nate stared at them. Waiting.
“What?” Tristan said.
Nate rolled his eyes and thrust his hands in between Scarlet and Tristan, pushing their bodies away from one another. “Ten feet. There you go. Now let’s go find Gabriel so we can get our Heather rescue on. Then we can finally find the Fountain of Youth and cure everyone of this God-forsaken and completely obnoxious curse.” Turning, he headed down the street toward the Millhouse.
Scarlet and Tristan slowly followed after him in stunned silence.
She was killing Tristan with her very presence.
Glancing at him under the yellow glow of the streetlamps, Scarlet ran her eyes along his profile as he stared forward with a clenched jaw. He was fierce. He was patient. He was everything she loved.
And he was dying.
Divulging the truth about the Fountain of Youth was no longer an option. Tristan’s life was at stake.
To hell with happily ever after.

Review: FLAWED by Kate Avelynn

FLAWED
by Kate Avelynn
ebook pub date 11/23/2012
paperback pub date 12/11/2012

product description from goodreads.com

Sarah O’Brien is alive because of the pact she and her brother made twelve years ago — James will protect her from their violent father if she promises to never leave him. For years, she’s watched James destroy his life to save hers. If all he asks for in return is her affection, she’ll give it freely.

Until, with a tiny kiss and a broken mind, he asks for more than she can give.

Sam Donavon has been James’ best friend — and the boy Sarah’s had a crush on — for as long as she can remember. As their forbidden relationship deepens, Sarah knows she’s in trouble. Quiet, serious Sam has decided he’s going to save her. Neither of them realizes James is far more unstable than her father ever was, or that he’s not about to let Sarah forget her half of the pact...

My Review:

FLAWED is a stunning piece of fiction, beautifully written and expertly crafted in such a way that grips you and carries you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and nerves. The three main characters, James, Sarah and Sam, each possess both good and bad characteristics, and I found myself both rooting for and cursing them constantly.

Sarah first comes across as timid and weak, but we discover (along with Sarah) her true self through the novel's progression. Her decisions throughout had me almost yelling out loud at her they were so wrong at times, but the great thing about Avelynn's storytelling prowess is that I completely understood why she was making them. Many times I found myself asking what I would do in her situation, which is always a great thing for a story to produce in a reader.

James is seemingly the polar opposite of Sarah. He's strong, protective, unafraid of standing up for both himself and his sister. But James also harbors a darkness that eats away at him from page one. A darkness that shows itself more and more as the novel moves forward. A darkness that threatens everyone. I have to admit that my feelings toward James changed by the end of the book, but to avoid any spoilers, I won't say how.

Sam, to me, is the light of this novel, though as I said, he isn't all good and perfect all the time (who is, right?). But Sam does represent possibility and hope, not only for James and Sarah, but also for himself. The relationships he has with both Sarah and James are severely damaged right from the start, but he has a quiet optimism inside that somehow keeps the fragility of those relationships intact.

My Rating:

I really can't express how powerful and moving this novel is. I was swept into the story from the first page, and I stayed there until the unbelievable end. I give FLAWED 5 Stars, and highly recommend (demand, really) that you all go and get a copy now and meet a cast of characters that will stay with you long after you've read the last word.

Cover Reveal -- SHRAPNEL by Stephanie Lawton!

You guys, I'm so excited to be part of the cover reveal for the awesome Stephanie Lawton's latest novel, SHRAPNEL (Evernight Teen, Jan 2013)!

I "met" Stephanie a few months ago via Twitter (seriously, how did we introverts ever meet people before social networking?) and can honestly say she is a super funny, super sweetheart. I quickly grabbed a copy of her debut novel WANT and fell in love, not only with the story and characters, but with Stephanie's spot-on writing. So needless to say, I'm excited for this one!

Okay, without further ado, here it is, the cover of SHRAPNEL by Stephanie Lawton!

Isn't it great? There are so many tells in such a simple shot: The quirky-yet-daring laced-up boots, the semi-revealing tank top, the nervous insecurity of the lace-wound fingers. Gah! I can't wait to read this!

Here's a bit about SHRAPNEL:

It’s been six years since Dylanie and her family visited a Civil War site and the place came alive with cannon fire. Problem was, no one could hear it but her.

Now she’s sixteen, her dad’s moved out, her mom’s come out of the closet and Dylan’s got a spot on Paranormal Teen, a reality TV show filming at historic Oakleigh Mansion. She’ll spend a weekend with two other psychic teens—Jake and Ashley—learning how to control her abilities.

None of them realized how much their emotional baggage would put them at the mercy of Oakleigh’s resident spirits, or that they’d find themselves pawns in the 150-year-old battle for the South’s legendary Confederate gold. Each must conquer their personal ghosts to face down Jackson, a seductive spirit who will do anything to protect the gold’s current location and avenge a heinous attack that destroyed his family.

And a bit about the author!

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

If you'd like to stalk learn more about Stephanie, visit her websiteFacebookGoodreads and Twitter

And be sure to tell her how awesome you think this cover is!

Let me start this post by saying Happy Release Day to David James! His debut novel, LIGHT OF THE MOON, is out today!

I've yet to read LOTM (I will soon!), but the description sounds awesome--and that cover is gorgeous, see?

David was gracious enough to answer a few questions, so I won't dilly-dally any longer...on to the interview! (p.s.--stick around, cause there's a giveaway at the end!)

1. Welcome, David, to my little corner of the Blogosphere! So, your debut novel LIGHT OF THE MOON comes out today! (cue the band!). I know all too well the level of nervous excitement you're going through right now. Can you tell us what's the number one thing you're most anxious about when it comes to your novel being in others' hands?

Woo! Thanks, Jamie. I wasn’t nervous until I READ THAT QUESTION! Kidding, kidding. Like you know, it is both very exciting and very nerve-racking to release a book. I’m so thankful for the amount of supportive and enthusiasm I’ve gotten from the writing and blogging communities. I guess the one thing I’m most anxious about is this: The. Font. In LIGHT OF THE MOON there are a few different font styles that play throughout the book, and it’s really only in the paperback version that you can see this. Because poetry is so important to this story, I wanted each “voice” to have a separate feel, and sometimes I used fonts to do this. So, get the paperback if you can! Plus, the paperback edition includes special extras that the e-book does not.

2. You went the Self-publishing route for LOTM, a venue that is gaining speed at a crazy rate. Did you try the "traditional" way first (be it seeking an agent or small press), or did you know going in that you wanted to publish this novel on your own?

Yes and no. For years I’ve been impressed with authors who have self-published.  Authors like Keary Taylor, Shelly Crane, and Michelle Leighton have really changed the self-publishing industry for the better. I did query several agents, got many emails of interest, but nothing stuck. Agents have a lot on their plates and sometimes it’s difficult to get your message across the first time around. More than anything, I wanted to get my story into the hands of readers, so I decided to take this road.

3. Your amazing cover was created by the equally amazing Keary Taylor (LOVE her!). Did you have much input as to the final product, or was it more of you gave her an idea of what you wanted and she went with it?

I’m so thrilled with how the cover turned out. Keary Taylor is truly as talented as a designer as she is an author, and I was so fortunate to be able to work with her. The cover design was a mutual effort, though I won’t pretend to have the talent Keary does for things like this. When you read the story, however, you’ll see just how much the cover actually reflects the words inside. All of the pretty is because of Keary Taylor, and I couldn’t be happier!

4. Just from the LOTM description, I get the sense that the ultimate story here is one of love. Is that something you always have strived/will strive for in your writing, to focus on love and the power it holds?

Yes! For some reason, I’ve always had this idea in my head that every single thing can be related back to love. I still believe that. For LIGHT OF THE MOON I wanted to create a world that was completely magical and paranormal and dangerous, but also was upon the idea that love is the root of it all. The idea of love is important in LIGHT OF THE MOON, but you’ll also see that finding and keeping love are two very different things in this world. And things get dangerous.

5. What's the main message you hope readers have after reading LIGHT OF THE MOON?

I love how you worded this question. The main message I hope readers take from LIGHT OF THE MOON is this: Hope. In fact, the last word in LIGHT OF THE MOON is “hoped.” Because this is a story that deals with so much danger resulting from love, I wanted to leave the reader with the knowledge that love may conquer all, but it’s hope that keeps most things alive.

6. Now that LOTM is out in the world, are you doing what so many of us do and wishing you could go back and change anything, or are you happy and content with the finished product?

Oh. My. Goodness. You’re killing me here, Jamie! I’m very happy with the final product (I mean, did you see the cover!?). I do think it’s interesting how I keep thinking about the world of Calum and Kate, and how it keeps expanding. I’m excited to work on the sequel, and I’m interested to see which characters the readers love and hate, and who they want back!

7. Do you have a certain time/place you do your writing, or do you take what you can get, lol?

I write all the time. All. The. Time. Mostly, I do a lot of writing in the morning and late at night. There’s this weird thing that happen mid-day when I refuse to do much of anything. Also, if I don’t have a book to read on the side, I find that I don’t get much writing done.

8. The world of writing is so subjective, as we all know. What's one book that the world has seemingly embraced that you just didn't care for or find as interesting?

I try to finish all books, though the more I read the more I find that sometimes you just can’t. The hardest books for me to read are non fiction. Textbooks. For whatever reason, I can’t finish anything like that is supposed to teach me things. I guess we all learn differently. Find knowledge in different places.

9. Who or what inspires you to keep going with your writing?

So many things. I think music and movies are the two things that inspire me most. I love how those two things can create vivid moments in only a few minutes and then stay with you forever.

10. And finally, a question I ask all interviewees: You've been invited to meet your absolute favorite author. Who would that be, what one question would you ask him or her, and what would your answer to that question be?

Maggie Stiefvater. After I fainted twice, I’d ask her “What is the one thing that inspires you most to be such a lyrical writer?” My response to that question would be “Life.”

Thanks, David, you're the best!

Thanks, Jamie! I’m so happy to be a part of your blog for today.

GONE GIRL goes traveling!

So the lovely Christa Desir was gracious enough a few weeks ago to offer me her copy of GONE GIRL by the super-fab Gillian Flynn (if you've never read her work, you have to. Like, have to.) and I quickly said YES! I offered to send the book back once I was finished reading it, but Christa said, "No way. Just pass on the goodness, that's all I ask."

So, I came up with a great idea--I would send GONE GIRL to anyone interested in reading it, said readers would write a personal comment to the author somewhere inside the book after doing so, and then I would send it on to Gillian as a sort of thank you for being so freakin' awesome. Sounds like fun, right?!

Now, what I need from you guys is simple. If you happen to be interested in reading GONE GIRL (note: This is adult fiction, not YA, but Gillian Flynn is a master storyteller/writer, so you'll love it, trust that!), simply leave me a comment stating that fact, along with your name/email address. Once I get 10-15 participants, I'll send out a group email with some details, kay? (note: US only, folks. Sorry, my international peeps!)

Okay, so comment away, and be sure to check out Gillian Flynn on her website, Goodreads and Facebook

Waiting on Wednesday...LIGHT OF THE MOON by David James!

The lovely Jill (a fellow Alabamian!) over at Breaking the Spine created the Waiting on Wednesday meme for us bloggers to showcase books we're waiting on.

I've recently gotten to know this week's author via Twitter and I must say he's a great guy. Funny, witty, talented (and adorable, too!)--so I know his debut novel is gonna be great! Please, if you haven't already, be sure to add to your TBRs...

product description from goodreads.com

Stars. Fire. Blood. Magic.

One night long ago, a constellation disappeared and fell from the sky in the form of a boy.

Secrets are being kept in the sleepy town of Lakewood Hollow, Colorado. Nothing but pools of blood and dripping words are left where bodies once were, and no one but Calum Wade seems to be worried. Life unfolds in shades of red for Calum, until a mysterious girl named Kate Black enrolls at his school and everything changes. Suddenly a dangerous world of dream demons, elemental enchanters, and blood witches unfurls before Calum. He learns that the stars have forever held his destiny, and that the constellations above are much more than what they seem. As Kate and Calum sink deep into a paranormal war, they realize that an ancient prophecy might hold the answers they seek. But life is not so easy for Calum, and he can feel his heart beat faster whenever Kate is close. Worse, Kate's blood holds a dark secret even more dangerous than the war between the demons and enchanters. Soon the two find that there are worse things than loving someone you shouldn't. For Calum and Kate, even love and the fiery power of stars may not be enough to break a curse as dark as the blood that binds their destiny.

A romantic story of true love and dark curses, LIGHT OF THE MOON will leave you breathless.

Doesn't that sound great? I just love that cover, so vibrant! And such a cool premise--a constellation dropping from the sky in the form of a boy? Yes, please!

Jump Around! Jump Around! Jump, Jump, Jump Around!

We've all heard it. We've all done it. That House of Pain hit "Jump Around" might have ridiculous lyrics, but it also has one of those beats that you just can't help but, well, jump around to.

And though most of us most likely would never admit to doing so, when we blare this song and actually "Jump Around," we have fun.

Well, I've given in to that "Jump Around" philosophy where my writing is concerned, and I must admit that, though it's against my nature (I'm typically a "start at the beginning and write till the end" type guy), I'm having fun with it.

My current contracted WIP (notice I said "contracted." Yeah, that means I have more than one going right now. But, don't we all? lol) has been giving me a bit of grief as of late, and I'm falling behind on my deadline for that dreaded first draft. note: It's due by the end of the year. Yeah. No matter how hard I've tried, I just haven't been able to eke out more than a few words at a time--which really stinks, am I right?

But the other day, a great scene popped into my head, complete with dialogue and clear setting, and I had to snag a scrap piece of paper and jot down the basics of it before I forgot it. When I got home, I quickly opened said WIP and fleshed out the scene, which ultimately led to another scene and another scene. Score! But, I never would've gotten those three (yes, I said THREE) scenes down had I not been open to letting a scene farther into the book out of my head. If I had done what is typical of me and ignored it until I got to the point where it was needed, I would still be sitting here wishing for inspiration.

So the moral of today's post is this: Regardless of your norm when it comes to your writing, loosen the straps a bit and be willing to "Jump Around."

You may just find that it's a lot more fun than you thought!

Oh, and just in case you wanna give it a listen (don't lie, you know you do), here's "Jump Around." Enjoy!
