Stand-Alone vs. Series:
What's your stance?

As always, an excellent question, G! I for one am a Series junkie. If I find a book I love (hello Twilight, Mortal Instruments, Vampire Academy...sorry) I want to stay in that world for as long as possible. I want to follow the characters and see what they get into next, who ends up with whom, who turns bad to good or good to bad; you get the idea. So yeah, I love a series.

On the flip side, too much of a good thing really can be bad. For example, there's a really popular series out right now that I absolutely loved. Notice I said loved. I don't anymore. This is a first for me, loving then not loving a series. The first four or five books in this series were great, but then things started moving so far from the original plot that I ended up not liking it--to the point that I didn't even finish the latest book and have no plans to finish the series (I think there are two more books yet to come out). I hate it, but it's the reality.

So even though I would proudly shout "I'm a Series Whore!" from the highest rooftop, I would whisper "But keep it small" right behind it.

Meet an Author Monday...Samantha Young!!

"Meet an Author Monday" is my way of showcasing up-and-coming authors (published and soon-to-be) to help get their names and books out there for others to see. It's a quick little interview just so you guys can get to know someone you may not have heard of before!

This week I'm pleased to welcome the talented Samantha Young to writers write, right?. Samantha is the author of The Tale of Lunarmorte series (I've reviewed the series on this blog) as well as many other works. Samantha has also been kind enough to offer a giveaway, so check out the details at the end of this post!

Hi Samantha, and welcome to my little blog. So great of you to stop by! I see on your website that you've written a lot of books! Tell me, do you have a writing ritual that you stick to no matter what, or do you simply write when the feeling strikes?

I used to write when the feeling struck but after finishing my first novel, Lunarmorte, I was like, "You can do this, put your back into" (wait...I think those might be hip hop lyrics...) and then started writing on a regular basis. At the moment I'm writing full-time so I write from 9am-5pm, just like a normal working day.

You get to write full-time? I'm jealous! I know that you self-published The Tale of Lunarmorte (which is a great series, by the way!). What has that experience been like? Do you think self-publishing is getting a much better name for itself since the successes it has seen lately (namely Amanda Hocking)?

Thanks Jamie :-) I'm really enjoying self-publishing. It's so much hard work and you really have to be dedicated to doing it if you want a chance at making a career out of your writing, but I love having the freedom and control over the whole process. I do think self-publishing is starting to get a much better name for itself, and yeah particularly recently due to Amanda Hocking's amazing success--I'm a big fan of Hocking; she's helped readers see that there are a lot of great novels out there in the indie universe.

I couldn't agree more, and I'm so happy for self-publishers! You release your self-published books both in print and ebook. Can you tell us where you've seen the most success between the two as far as sales? Do you think ebook is the future of publishing?

Ebook sales are definitely slaughtering my print sales thus far. There is a massive percentage between the two; my ebook sales are really starting to build momentum but the print sales have been slow. I don't know if that really means anything. My ebooks are cheap, but because of cost of production, my paperbacks are the price of an average paperback. People are far more willing to download a 99 cent ebook from a self-published author than pay out the $8.99 for a paperback.

Don't get me wrong, I think ebooks are here to stay; however (even though I love my kindle!), I think a lot of people are like me and enjoy having the actual print copy of their favorite novel too. Perhaps the gap between ebook publishing and print publishing will start to narrow in the future, but I don't think ebooks will ever take over print publishing.

I'm with you on enjoying print far more than ebook! So what's in store for the future for Samantha Young? Any projects you're working on now that you'd like to share with us?

Ooh I have a few I'm excited about. The first is my fantasy romance novel Slumber, a solo novel very loosely based on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale (very loosely :-P). It's set in another world entirely and was so much fun to write because I could literally let my imagination dictate anything. Slumber is a quest-adventure-coming-of-age fairy tale, and I will be releasing it in June of this year.

I'm also working on another trilogy, The Warriors of Ankh. This one is a little different because the protagonist is a little darker than my other heroines. I'm hoping for a late Summer/early Fall release for the first novel, Blood Will Tell.

My other project, which is kind of in the background for the moment, is the Repercussions series, a spin-off from the Tale of Lunarmorte series--each book will join different characters in the Lunarmorte universe as they struggle to cope with the new world of the supernaturals. I'm hoping to start releasing this series early 2012.

Wow! Samantha, you are one busy writer! And because of that, I'm moving on to my last (and always favorite) question that I like to ask everyone. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one book to read, which would it be and why?

Up until a few weeks ago I probably wouldn't have been able to choose, but then I read Patrick Ness' The Knife of Never Letting Go and he made the choice pretty easy. I love Ness' unique writing style and how he manages to exude so much feeling with such subtlety of writing. I could read about Todd and Viola over and over and over again...

Well I'll have to keep an eye out for that one! Thanks so much for stopping by and chatting with me Samantha, and good luck on your continued success!

Explicit Material: How do you
feel about explicit language
and/or sexual content in
YA books?

Wow, great question, and a really hard one for me to choose a side. So I won't choose a side...I'll choose both.

I want to start by saying that explicit language and/or sexual content in any book doesn't bother me if it's necessary to the plot or character. If you have a by-the-book Priest talking like a sailor for no apparent reason, then that's gonna bother me.

But if you have a teen (since we're discussing YA) who is trying desperately to fit in with the popular crowd and every other teen in that crowd talks like a sailor so your character does too, then to me it fits. Your character needs to seem realistic. If explicit language/dialect rounds out your character, then by all means use it.

As far as sex goes, pretty much the same applies...to a certain extent. For example, if your character is a drugged out prostitute hell-bent on sleeping her (or his) way through New York City, I don't really need an explicit sex scene to know that sex is happening. That can easily be implied and I won't lose anything from the story.

But if your character is a high-school virgin (again, because we're talking YA) who is ready to give up her virginity to her boyfriend/soul mate/man she intends to marry one day, then a tiny, tastefully written sex scene is understandable--but it doesn't need to be graphic by nature. If your story involves a sex crime and the act itself reveals clues to the reader for future use, then it's necessary to the plot/character development and must be included, graphic or not.

Either way--sex or no sex, explicit language or no explicit language--great writing is great writing. And even the most uncomfortable or erotic or explicit of scenes can be accepted if they are written amazingly well.

Meet an Author Monday...Susanne Winnacker!

This week I'm pleased to welcome the lovely Susanne Winnacker to writers write, right?. Susanne is the author of the upcoming YA dystopian The Other Life, available Spring 2012 here in the UK and Fall 2012 here in the US.

Hi Susanne, and welcome to my blog...so great of you to stop by today! I see from yourwebsite that you live in beautiful Germany, where the summers are cold and the winters are colder! I've always been curious about something...how has it been for you to market yourself across the globe? Easy? Difficult? Any tips you can give on global self-marketing?

Yes, I live in Germany and you're absolutely right, it's almost always cold here! I knew I had to focus strongly on online marketing because I didn't have the chance to attend conferences or other writer events in the US or in the UK. Even before I sold my book I was already blogging and using Twitter. It was mainly to get and stay in contact with other writers and not so much a marketing tool. Marketing yourself across the globe has actually never been easier than it is today. With Twitter, Facebook, Blogger and Goodreads you can reach people all over the world, you can build friendships.

I don't think someone should start tweeting or blogging or facebooking with the sole purpose of marketing. People will get tired of someone who does nothing but talk about their book.

That is excellent advice...a great mix of book promotion and general chatting is great! Your debut YA dystopian, The Other Life, sounds awesome and I can't wait to read it. Can you tell us a tiny bit about where you got the idea?

The Other Life starts with Sherry and her family in a bunker and that was one of the first scenes that came to mind. I didn't yet know why they were in the bunker but I figured it out very fast. Numbers and counting play a big role in my book -- Sherry counts the days, weeks or months since she's done something (seen daylight or felt wend tousle her hair). I knew immediately that I wanted the counting motif to be an important part of The Other Life; the rest of the plot took a bit longer to figure out.

That's so great...what a scene to have pop into your head! So how long after signing with the amazing Julia Churchill of Greenhouse Literary did you get the news about The Other Life selling to Marshall Cavendish? An exciting time I guess?

Julia leads the UK office of Greenhouse, so we went on submission in the UK first. I sold my book to Usborne in October and then went on submission in the US. So my sale to Marshall Cavendish followed the UK deal. I signed with Julia in August and it took two months from signing to the first book deal in the UK and four months to the US deal. It was an exciting and nerve-wrecking time!

Wow, an agent and TWO book deals in only four months...that is exciting! Well, knowing that your debut book will be on bookshelves next year is a great feeling (mine will be out then, too!). What has this huge accomplishment meant to you?

It still feels very unreal to me. I guess I'll really realize it once I actually see my book on shelves. For me, seeing my book published and working in the publishing business means that I've finally found my dream job. I've never really loved what I'd been doing (studying law) and I'd almost given up on finding something I could enjoy. Being a full-time writer is a dream come true!

It is a dream job...one that I'm sure all writers have! Congrats on being able to do what you love! Now, for my final question, I ask a simple one: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one book, which would you choose and why?

One book? That's tough. It would either be The Hunger Games or Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (my favorite HP book). I could read both books over and over again and they'd never get boring.

If you could visit a fictional setting in any book,
where would you go?

Well this one for me is super easy. I actually have two answers: One is a totally fictional place, and the other is half real/half fiction (unfortunately!).

First, I would love to visit the world created by the amazing Suzanne Collins in The Hunger Games. Katniss' world is tumultuous, harsh, desperate...but so realistic that I think if we were to drive down one of those abandoned-looking roads slicing through west Texas (you know the ones G?) we would stumble upon District 12 nestled among the rock formations and sandstorms. Even though I highly doubt I would survive the Games, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to visit this dystopian world!





I'm sure that my second choice is going to raise some eyebrows.





I so badly want to visit Forks, Washington--the setting for Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. Now before you all scream and shout "Forks isn't fiction, it's real!", I want to visit the Forks from Stephenie's books. You know, the one that has this:

Yeah. You're not screaming "Forks is real!" now, are you?

Meet an Author Monday...Angela Corbett!!

Hello faithful followers, and welcome to the second installment of "Meet an Author Monday" here at writers write, right?. I'm so glad you all have stuck with me on my little blog...it's so much more fun with friends, don't ya think? Yeah, me too!

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming someone who has fast become a friend to me. She's funny, super nice and helpful, and beautiful (I mean, look at that photo!). Please everyone, welcome to the blog today my pal Angela Corbett, author of the soon-to-be-released Eternal Starling.

Hey Angela, welcome to my blog! So great of you to stop by for a visit today. I won't keep you too long...I know you have lots of writing to do! Tell me, what did it feel like when you learned that your book, Eternal Starling, will be published?

Hi, Jamie! Thanks for asking me to stop by! I was ecstatic when I found out Pendrell Publishing wanted to publish Eternal Starling, as well as the other two books in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy! I read the offer email at least twenty times before I convinced myself it was real, then I immediately called my husband, best friend, and parents. After that, I danced around the house with my Pomeranian, who wasn't sure why we were celebrating, but he was happy to join in. I wrote Eternal Starling in 2008 and almost gave up on finding a publisher for it, so it's still pretty surreal to think that in eight months, people will actually be able to read the book.

It's so great when all your hard work finally pays off, huh? Like me, you went with a smaller publishing house. What made you decide to give that route a try? Pleased with your decision thus far?

I'm VERY happy with Pendrell Publishing! They have been great about including me in decisions, and I like that I get to be involved in the whole process. I knew I would have a hard time getting Eternal Starling published through one of the big houses because the characters in my book are in college. Since the characters are between the ages of 18-22, the book doesn't really fit in the YA genre, or the Adult genre. Smaller publishers are much more willing to take on books that don't meet a defined category. In the past, being a successful author meant that you had to be published through one of the big houses. Now there are so many different paths to publication that authors have a lot of options. People just want good books to read, and those books get published in many different ways.

The exact reason I took that route, too! So tell me, what's a typical day like for you? Are you able to find the time to write daily?

I have a day job, but I do try to write every day. I prefer to write at night because it lets me shut out most distractions...like my dog tagging me every five minutes wanting me to run around the yard with him. I write for a few hours before I go to bed, and since reading is my addiction, I can't go to sleep until I've read at least a chapter from another book.

Me too! I have to read each night--and no way can I stop mid-chapter! My journey to publication has just begun and already I'm nervous for others to read my work. What about you? Any nerves tingling beneath the surface?

Of course! The closer the publication date gets, the more nervous I become! I started posting chapters from Eternal Starling on my website in 2009, so some people have been waiting two years to find out what happens in the rest of the book! I hope Eternal Starling will meet their expectations and people will like the book. As a writer, I think you have to be prepared for criticism. I handle it by telling myself that the people who like my work will be louder than the people who don't.

Ooh, I love that. Excellent advice for writers! Lastly, the question I like to ask each interviewee: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one book, which one would you choose?

Only one??? Geez! This might be the hardest question I've ever answered! I'd probably want Katniss's book of edible plants, but that might be hard to get a hold of. I just finished Maria V. Snyder's Study Series and I'm so haunted by the characters that I want to read the trilogy all over again. I'd probably take the third book in the series, Fire Study.

Death of Fine Fridays...and the birth of TGIF!!

Yes, it is sad but true...Fine Fridays is no more. My apologies to those out there who looked forward to Friday mornings (I'm one of them!), but I have decided to be a bit more productive on Fridays, so the hotties had to go.

Ahem.

Now I've joined forces with my blogging bestie Ginger "G" over at GReads! for her TGIF meme. This week's question:

Book Tears:
Do you get emotional when you read?
Which books had you in tears?

I have to admit that I don't really cry when reading books. I get scared sometimes, laugh out loud a lot, even get angry. But cry? Not really.

But I have.

There are two books that come to mind right away. One is YA, one is more adult. I loved both books equally, but the adult book I don't plan on reading ever again. Yeah, it was that heart-breaking.



The YA book that actually brought tears to my eyes is Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Beautifully written with an exciting and unique premise, Delirium pulled me in from page one and didn't let go until the end--which is when the tears came. The ending to this book (and I won't tell you in case you haven't read it yet...and if you haven't, get thee to a bookstore NOW!) was a surprise to say the least, and it left me feeling torn open and shocked--in a good way. I loved this book and cannot wait for the next installment in the series. Trust me, you want to read this one.

The Adult (I guess?) book that absolutely without a doubt ripped open my heart and left it bleeding alone on the floor was Marley & Me by John Grogan. I've said it before...I am a HUGE animal lover. I think I love them more than people (sorry, but true). My dogs mean the world to me and make my day brighter no matter my mood. So when I came across this book I was a bit reluctant to read it because even though I hadn't heard what happened in it, I had an idea. But I opened it anyway and loved it. Marley is such a great character that really brings a family together and shows them joy and love. And yes, when the end rolled around I could barely see the words through the tears. I felt so depressed and saddened after I read it, and I vowed never to read it again. And I won't.

So there they are, the two books (that I can recall at this moment) that actually made me tear up. Thanks, G, for this really cool meme, and go visit her site folks. It's really great!

Meet an Author Monday...well, not THIS Monday

I know last Monday I started the "Meet an Author Monday" meme with the fabulous Lani Woodland (if you didn't read the interview, go here) with the intention of it becoming a weekly event. Lo and behold on the second installment I've already fell short.

With all the excitement of the second half of last week (you mean you haven't heard? Then by all means, go read this) I completely forgot to contact an author with questions for an interview. My apologies to everyone involved...I'll try my best to make sure that doesn't happen again.

I didn't want you guys to stop by my blog today and find that same old post from Friday, so in light of this snafu I decided to show some awesome books I can't wait to get my hands on...enjoy!

I'm going to be published! (cue chorus of Angels, the New York Philharmonic and a mariachi band)




Yes, I can barely believe it myself. And no, this is NOT an April Fool's joke! Honestly, I don't think it has really set in just yet. I am going to have a book published! Agh! The wonderful Kamilla Quast, president of Pendrell Publishing, has agreed to take a chance on little ole' me and publish my YA Paranormal series--the first book is scheduled to be released Spring 2012. I can't thank her enough!

So that's where my life sits right now: This time next year I will (hopefully) be a published author! WOW!!
