Meet an Author Monday...Angela Corbett!!

Hello faithful followers, and welcome to the second installment of "Meet an Author Monday" here at writers write, right?. I'm so glad you all have stuck with me on my little blog...it's so much more fun with friends, don't ya think? Yeah, me too!

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming someone who has fast become a friend to me. She's funny, super nice and helpful, and beautiful (I mean, look at that photo!). Please everyone, welcome to the blog today my pal Angela Corbett, author of the soon-to-be-released Eternal Starling.

Hey Angela, welcome to my blog! So great of you to stop by for a visit today. I won't keep you too long...I know you have lots of writing to do! Tell me, what did it feel like when you learned that your book, Eternal Starling, will be published?

Hi, Jamie! Thanks for asking me to stop by! I was ecstatic when I found out Pendrell Publishing wanted to publish Eternal Starling, as well as the other two books in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy! I read the offer email at least twenty times before I convinced myself it was real, then I immediately called my husband, best friend, and parents. After that, I danced around the house with my Pomeranian, who wasn't sure why we were celebrating, but he was happy to join in. I wrote Eternal Starling in 2008 and almost gave up on finding a publisher for it, so it's still pretty surreal to think that in eight months, people will actually be able to read the book.

It's so great when all your hard work finally pays off, huh? Like me, you went with a smaller publishing house. What made you decide to give that route a try? Pleased with your decision thus far?

I'm VERY happy with Pendrell Publishing! They have been great about including me in decisions, and I like that I get to be involved in the whole process. I knew I would have a hard time getting Eternal Starling published through one of the big houses because the characters in my book are in college. Since the characters are between the ages of 18-22, the book doesn't really fit in the YA genre, or the Adult genre. Smaller publishers are much more willing to take on books that don't meet a defined category. In the past, being a successful author meant that you had to be published through one of the big houses. Now there are so many different paths to publication that authors have a lot of options. People just want good books to read, and those books get published in many different ways.

The exact reason I took that route, too! So tell me, what's a typical day like for you? Are you able to find the time to write daily?

I have a day job, but I do try to write every day. I prefer to write at night because it lets me shut out most distractions...like my dog tagging me every five minutes wanting me to run around the yard with him. I write for a few hours before I go to bed, and since reading is my addiction, I can't go to sleep until I've read at least a chapter from another book.

Me too! I have to read each night--and no way can I stop mid-chapter! My journey to publication has just begun and already I'm nervous for others to read my work. What about you? Any nerves tingling beneath the surface?

Of course! The closer the publication date gets, the more nervous I become! I started posting chapters from Eternal Starling on my website in 2009, so some people have been waiting two years to find out what happens in the rest of the book! I hope Eternal Starling will meet their expectations and people will like the book. As a writer, I think you have to be prepared for criticism. I handle it by telling myself that the people who like my work will be louder than the people who don't.

Ooh, I love that. Excellent advice for writers! Lastly, the question I like to ask each interviewee: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one book, which one would you choose?

Only one??? Geez! This might be the hardest question I've ever answered! I'd probably want Katniss's book of edible plants, but that might be hard to get a hold of. I just finished Maria V. Snyder's Study Series and I'm so haunted by the characters that I want to read the trilogy all over again. I'd probably take the third book in the series, Fire Study.
