The awesomeness that is Ginger (or G, as I like to call her) over at GReads! has created a great meme that is tons of fun. Each Friday, she poses a question for anyone to answer. Go check her out and join in!
This Friday's Question:
Stand-Alone vs. Series:
What's your stance?
Stand-Alone vs. Series:
What's your stance?
As always, an excellent question, G! I for one am a Series junkie. If I find a book I love (hello Twilight, Mortal Instruments, Vampire Academy...sorry) I want to stay in that world for as long as possible. I want to follow the characters and see what they get into next, who ends up with whom, who turns bad to good or good to bad; you get the idea. So yeah, I love a series.
On the flip side, too much of a good thing really can be bad. For example, there's a really popular series out right now that I absolutely loved. Notice I said loved. I don't anymore. This is a first for me, loving then not loving a series. The first four or five books in this series were great, but then things started moving so far from the original plot that I ended up not liking it--to the point that I didn't even finish the latest book and have no plans to finish the series (I think there are two more books yet to come out). I hate it, but it's the reality.
So even though I would proudly shout "I'm a Series Whore!" from the highest rooftop, I would whisper "But keep it small" right behind it.

Haha, I must know what this series is that you gave up on. I think I might have an idea though.
ReplyDeleteTGIF Jamie!!
Hmm, I'm a little torn between stand alone titles and series. The only series I've really ever read were Twilight and the Mortal Instruments, but I'm looking for to reading the next entries of Divergent and Across the Universe. I love seeing how a character grows over the course of a few novels, but I also like having an air of mystery. I love them both! :)
ReplyDeleteMy answer is the exact same as Pam's. No surprise there, huh? Anyway, I think series are fun and sometimes you do just want to stay inside of a world and follow the characters. Other times a stand alone title is intriguing and I like being left with questions hanging. It feeds my imagination. Tough decision--I would I say I love both categories as I love books in general!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of getting sick of the deluge of series books. (Sidenote, what the heck is the plural of a series, serieses?) In YA especially, with all the paranormal and urban fantasy and dystopian trilogies, I'd really like to read a book and have the story actually end, not have to hunt down another two books or wait another three years for a resolution. There are exceptions to the rule, though.
ReplyDelete- Sophia.
I have had a series like that recently. I cannot get through the latest. I was so in love. SO...and now I'm simply annoyed. It's sad when a series goes too far.
