Hmm, this one's a toughie. Sure, there have been plenty of books that I didn't enjoy (several classics I was forced to endure during high school come to mind), but one that I was really excited to read that I didn't enjoy? Well, I guess it would have to be...

Sounds really good, right? A couple of my online pals recommended this one to me, saying how great the series is. So naturally I was really excited to read it! So I hopped online, looked up the title, and ordered a copy. As soon as it arrived in the mail, I eagerly began reading.
And that's kind of where the excitement ended for me. Don't get me wrong, the book is very well written. It kind of reminds me of an old school detective novel (think the Kay Scarpetta series by Sue Grafton) in its style, which is perfectly fine and enjoyable. But there was just something about this book that I couldn't get into. I put it down, giving up on finishing, until one of the said friends from earlier said I should keep going. So I picked it up again.
I did manage to finish it, but I still didn't care much for it. I really think that I would like the series if I kept going (those friends and I share similar book interests), but I honestly can't say if I ever will. But, never say never!

Yes yes and yes. This has happened to me. I won't say what the book was but after I read it (or tried rather) I just couldn't understand why all the hype. OH! Are you free for bloffee this morning? You've been invited over to my place;)

I don't mention names, but there was a thriller about horse racing I couldn't wait to read. I got it and opened it up and started reading...ugh. I couldn't get into it at all. I really tried. The premise was great, cover was cool, and the blurb was too. I couldn't finish it and thank god it wasn't a book I had to review. Actually, if it was, I'd have contacted the publisher and said I'm not the target audience for this one here's your book back.

Oh no! I was just thinking about reading this one. The premise sounds too good to skip over completely, but I'll take your perspective into account to temper the high praise that keeps getting foisted upon it. :)
ReplyDeleteYep, I've had it happen to me, too! It's a lot more fun when the opposite happens and you get pleasantly surprised by something you never thought you'd like! I'm glad Creepy Query Girl 'introduced' us. Love your blog!! (And I am SO Team Peeta, too!)
ReplyDeleteThat book does look good! See, that's the thing: the book can be written well and all, and others might like it, but you still might not connect with it. That's what I have to remember when I'm trying to get published! Not everyone is going to connect with it, but I have to find that agent that likes it too.
